City provides permanent home for Powell River Search and Rescue

Powell River Search and Rescue now has a permanent home thanks to support from Powell River City Council.  At the regular Council meeting held June 06, 2013, Council unanimously agreed to transfer the City owned property at 6791 Drake Street to Search and Rescue at a cost of $1.00.

“Powell River Search and Rescue is a group of dedicated volunteers that provide an invaluable service to the region.” said Mayor Dave Formosa.  “We are pleased to provide this facility for their training and operations centre.”

Laurence Edwards, President of Powell River Search and Rescue (SAR) notes that this permanent facility will enable Search and Rescue to expand their ability to develop additional skills. “With a well trained and more professional volunteer we will be able to assist other agencies and the community in the advent of any emergency issues.” said Mr. Edwards.

Powell River Regional Emergency Program  Coordinator Ryan Thoms adds, “I believe this is a very positive development that will lead to improved public safety.

SAR appreciates the community support this past year for their fund raising effort for a new Command Vehicle and is pleased to report they have purchased the vehicle.  “Although we still need to equip the vehicle with radios, emergency lighting, front winch and other items, we have suspended our fund raising effort for the Command Vehicle and transferred all our efforts to the new facility.” said Mr. Edwards.  “We are hoping that our requests for financial donations and donation in-kind from the community will be as well received as the incredible response we have had to the Command Vehicle.”

During the period March 2012 to July 2013 there were 20 local incidents involving SAR and the number is increasing annually.  SAR is always looking for dedicated people who are active and  are prepared to volunteer their time.  SAR conducts an annual  certification training course set by the Justice Institute of British Columbia.  Any one interested in joining or supporting SAR can email edwardsprsar@hotmail.com.
