Taxes & Assessments

Each year, BC Assessment (a provincial Crown corporation) produces independent and uniform property assessments on an annual basis for all property owners in the province. BC Assessment provides information about properties within the City of Powell River to the City as the basis for calculation of annual property taxes.

Tax  Rates
By May 15 of each year, Council approves the annual tax rates bylaw on which property taxes are based. The rates are expressed as an amount per thousand dollars of assessed property value, combined with a flat rate tax on Class 1 Residential of $335.00 on each parcel with improvements; or a flat rate of $87.00 on each parcel without improvements (vacant land only).

Annual Tax Notice
Tax notices are usually mailed out the last week of May each year, shortly after Council approves the tax rates bylaw. The tax notice shows the amount of property taxes due, and may include parcel taxes and utility fees applicable to your property. The City also serves as the collector for taxing bodies such as
  • Provincial School Taxes
  • Powell River Regional District
  • Powell River Regional Hospital District
  • BC Assessment
  • Municipal Finance Authority

After July 3, 2018 a 10% penalty will be imposed on all outstanding current tax balances. Penalties are also applied to any balance owing due to an unclaimed Home Owner Grant.
Tax Sale
Each September the City is required under the Local Government Act to hold an annual tax sale for those properties with delinquent taxes (unpaid taxes for 3 years). For more information please read the following;
