Media Release - Community Forest Annual Dividend is Highest Ever

The City of Powell River Community Forest has provided a record setting dividend from timber sales that will help finance community projects throughout the entire Powell River region.
At the Monday, May 29 meeting of Powell River City Council, President of Powell River Community Forest (PRCF) Ltd., Greg Hemphill, said the community forest representatives in attendance were pleased to present the 2016 dividend to the City of Powell River in the amount of $1,975,639.

Media Release - Sea Lion Threat Closes Cleaning Station

Due to the presence of sea lions in the area, the fish cleaning stations at the North Boat Harbour will be closed until further notice.
All fish catch is to be cleaned at people’s residences or at sea to lessen the danger of contact with these large sea mammals.
According to a notice from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, sea lions and seals are dangerous and should not be disturbed. They bite and can carry harmful diseases. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has stated that for people’s safety, they should not touch or feed these animals.

Media Release - City Applying For $12 Million In Grants For Wastewater Treatment

Two grant applications totaling $12 million will be applied for to help underwrite project costs for expansion of Powell River’s liquid waste treatment.
At the Thursday, May 19 Powell River City Council meeting, council unanimously approved two $6 million grant applications for the Wildwood to Townsite sewer system project, and for the Westview to consolidated wastewater treatment plant sewer system project. Both grant applications will be applied for under the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Strategic Priorities Fund.

City Approves Lot 450 Land Purchase
Powell River City Council approved borrowing of up to $800,000 for the purchase of 132 acres of Lot 450 land.
At the Thursday, May 18 Powell River City Council meeting, council voted unanimously to execute a purchase agreement to buy the land with a loan from the Municipal Finance Authority. The loan will be repaid within five years, with annual principal payment and interest charges to be funded from annual property taxation. The land is to be purchased from PRSC Land Developments Ltd.
