Media Release - Woman Survives House Fire

Immediate action by Powell River’s first responders resulted in a woman being pulled and saved from an intensely burning residence.
At approximately 6:30 am on Tuesday, May 2, there was a structure fire called in by a neighbouring resident at the Blue Mountain Mobile Home Park on Duncan Street. When fire crews arrived a double-wide home was burning extensively.
“It was a wood-framed structure with a single occupant,” said Rocky Swanson, Deputy Fire Chief. “Upon arrival, our crews saw thick smoke and flame.

Media Release - City Dismantles Sanitary Dump Station

The Willingdon Beach-area sanitary dump station for emptying recreational vehicle holding tanks is now closed.
Murray Steer, the City of Powell River’s Superintendent of Public Works, said city crews have dismantled the dumping facility in the parking lot adjacent to Willingdon Beach Park. People requiring a sanitary dump station can make use of the one adjacent to the car wash at the Powell River Airport. Steer said it is open and available 24 hours a day.
The City had provided forewarning of the closure.

Media Release - City Offered to Purchase Lot 450 Property

To expand its land base and to provide opportunities and options for the land’s use, Powell River City Council is contemplating purchase of a 132-acre property adjacent to Millennium Park.
At the Tuesday, April 25 special finance committee meeting, the City announced it has offered to purchase the land, known by its legal description as Lot A, District Lot 450, Group 1, New Westminster District, Plan BCP23887 Except Part Subdivided by Plan BCP42255, for $800,000. The offer to purchase is good until the end of May.

Media Release - Water Main Flushing Program Will Clean System

As part of ongoing efforts to maintain infrastructure, the City of Powell River will begin a water main flushing program this month.
The program, scheduled to last from April 24 until June 9, is an integral part of an approach to protecting and enhancing the quality and safety of the city’s drinking water.
