Media Release - Fire Department receives $1,000 stipend to conduct home fire sprinkler educational demonstration

September 27, 2017

Powell River Fire Rescue was awarded a $1,000 stipend from the national nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC), to increase its home fire sprinkler education by conducting a live, side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration.

This year, HFSC is selecting fire departments in Canada that participate in its Built For Life Fire Department Program to receive the stipends and educate the general public. Built for Life Fire Departments commit to making home fire sprinklers a focus of the departments’ public education efforts.

“We are honoured to have been selected for this generous stipend,” said Powell River Fire Rescue Chief Terry Peters. “Using the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition’s educational materials, we will move forward with this important public education demonstration, which illustrates the danger of home fires, especially in today’s lightweight construction homes, and, more importantly, the lifesaving benefits of home fire sprinklers.”

The live demonstration will include two similarly furnished rooms — one protected with fire sprinklers and the other without fire sprinklers. People who attend the demonstration will be able to experience firsthand how quickly a fire can become deadly, versus the quick response and effectiveness of a fire sprinkler system in controlling or extinguishing a fire.

The fire department will be set up from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 14 at the Town Centre Mall parking lot as part of Fire Prevention Week. The burn demonstration will take place at 1 pm. Target Installations is donating the sprinklers for the side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration.
