MEDIA RELEASE - New Holiday Event will be an Illuminating Experience

The City of Powell River’s Christmas Tree Light-up at the Powell River Recreation Complex will provide a festive kickoff to the holiday season.

The Light-up event is going to tie in with the opening of Winter Wonderland, which is the seasonal decoration of the skating rink at the Powell River Recreation Complex. The light up, which was proposed by City of Powell River Council, was created with the goal of establishing an annual social event that engages the community and one that shows Council’s appreciation to the community. The festivities will take place at the west entrance of the Complex on Friday, December 8, from 6 to 9 pm.

Alex Craig, Community Recreation Program Coordinator, has been working on the event details over the last couple of months and has put together a program that will put the community at the forefront. "We wanted to focus on creating even more community connections and felt that by tying this into the already popular Winter Wonderland, we could achieve that," he said. "It’s all a part of bringing the community together. Winter Wonderland is a popular activity in this community and we wanted to tie this light display into the opening night."

The event promises to be full of fun and festive activities. "We are going to have the entrance area set up with tons of LED lights, some ornamental displays and we are going to have two fully decorated 20-foot trees outside," Craig said. "There will also be Christmas carolling, free snacks and hot beverages for everyone to enjoy. Ryder Spick will also have his giant lit-up truck onsite and we have it on good word that Santa Claus will be onsite, too, for pictures in the photo booth."

At 6:30 pm, the Christmas light-up will commence and the entrance will be lit up for everyone to see. After the light up, people can either choose to go for a free skate on the Winter Wonderland, go for a free swim, or simply hang out and soak up the festive atmosphere.

"The goal is to create a peaceful, pleasant holiday atmosphere where people can gather, interact with one another and enjoy the festive season." Craig said. "We want to create more events like this, throughout the year, where there is opportunity for the community to gather, engage with one another, and celebrate." _____________________________________________________________________________________
