| We are privileged to become a part of the Olympic spirit with the honour of carrying the Olympic flame. It passes into our hands from the traditional territory of the Sliammon First Nation, in which we live, acknowledge and respect.
The Olympic flame has long been a symbol of the Olympic Games. More than that, it is a symbol of peace and friendship, of inspiration and passion and, above all, a symbol of unity amongst all peoples. Our community represents a dynamic and modern culture rooted deeply in the history of its people and expressed through the many talents and achievements of our citizens. Your history, your stories make up the cultural fabric of our community. Being selected as a route community on the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will leave an enduring and profound legacy that will continue well after the flame is extinguished. I encourage everyone to get involved in celebrating this once in a generation opportunity. On behalf of the City of Powell River, I would like to congratulate the Royal Bank of Canada and Coca Cola on the considerable investments they have made in partnership with VANOC to ensure that every Canadian has opportunity to be inspired by the Olympic games. Canada is made up of every hope we cherish, every dream we pursue, every project we realize. We are empowered by the creativity and imagination and the human energy of our citizens. I cannot be more proud to be a Canadian. With Glowing Hearts Des Plus Brillants Exploits Mayor Stewart B. Alsgard
