| 6/24/2010 |
At a special Council meeting held 23 June, Council received a report from the Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture advising of recent developments regarding the track project at the Recreation Complex. The report advises of the discovery of a heron nesting site on the Complex property and includes comment from the Ministry of Environment and biologist, Ian Moul, regarding the herons. The herons are protected under the BC Wildlife Act. Mr. Moul advises that the herons appear to be in the incubation stage of their nesting cycle and likely will be using the site until mid to late September. The report addresses alternate options for the project, time constraints due to grant funding requirements and construction time, and recommends relocating the track facility at Timberlane Park. After discussion of the report, Council unanimously resolved to locate the new track facility at Timberlane Park. The City has issued a tender for the construction of the track and it is expected that Council will consider awarding the construction contract by mid-July.
